YogaBellies tame the Dragons’

August 30, 2013

Mum of one and founder of YogaBellies® Cheryl MacDonald, along with her husband and pregnant YogaBellies teacher, Sophie Keil will appear on Dragons’ Den this coming Sunday. The den falls into unusual serenity when this Glasgow couple demo their women’s yoga franchise….

Picture2The busy mum and author of the recently published Birth ROCKS, started YogaBellies after the birth of her son three years ago. Cheryl hoped to combine her passion for Yoga with that of being a mother. “Being pregnant and giving birth to my son was the most amazing time of my life,” Cheryl says. “I have practiced Yoga for a number of years and found it was something that really helped me throughout the key stages of my life. I wanted to help other women to have the same experience that I had and to enable them to work around their family and love what they do.”

The successful businesswoman (who was a business analyst previously) now has over 80 YogaBellies franchisees across three continents. YogaBellies teachers are given complete training in the unique YogaBellies techniques and run their own socially-conscious YogaBellies business, offer the classes in their local area. “You don’t need to have lots of practical yoga experience to join us, anyone can master the physical aspects of yoga. We want teachers who can demonstrate their willingness to support other women, work around their family and be truly committed to YogaBellies philosophies.”

Cheryl was recently been handpicked as one of the “Top 100 Mums in Business” and was nominated for “Mumprenuer Champion” at the MumsClub 2012 awards. In addition to this, Cheryl also made the finals of Women of the Year 2012 award and YogaBellies as an organization was a finalist in the Working Mums Employer of the Year awards[i] and were finalists in the What’s on 4 Little One’s Best Pre and Post Natal activity award.

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Bramley Cavies, Leeds

Helen and Christine Broadhead are the co-founders of Bramley Cavies Animal Rescue and Education. Bramley Cavies was set up by the mother-daughter team when they realised the desperate need for a safe and loving place for abandoned and unwanted guinea pigs to go.

Helen has worked with animals since the age of 14 and, as such, has gained a large amount of knowledge not only with guinea pigs, but also with many other species of animals. She is passionate about the animals she helps and will help as many as possible. She recently took in a snake after a frantic phone call saying a couple had found it on their dining table after being out for the day! Helen quickly found space for the snake and had it safe in its new home within just a couple of hours.

bramleycaviesChristine is Helen’s mother who encouraged and nurtured Helen’s love of animals. Growing up the house was always full of a variety of animals which together they looked after and nurtured.

Helen and Christine have owned guinea pigs for many years and love their cheeky, fun loving nature. The rescue was founded in 2011 and, in just 18 months had achieved registered charity status. The rescue has grown from strength to strength, growing from rescuing and rehoming guinea pigs to many other small animals including, but not limited to, rabbits, tortoises, snakes and even tarantulas.

The rescue has also grown to include a larger education side. Helen and the team are regularly visiting local schools, nursing homes, tourist attractions and events to raise awareness not only making people aware of the amount of animals in need, but also in the correct way to care for the animals. They educate people on the correct housing animals need and the correct diet amongst other things. It is the rescues belief that if they can promote positive ownership, less animals will end up in rescues as a result.

All the team at Bramley Cavies Animal Rescue and Education are passionate about animals, big and small, and wherever they go they are promoting animal welfare and spreading information on how to care for animals.

Bramley Cavies has been nominated in the category Best Community, Fund Raising Group or Charity Group. To vote for Bramley Cavies please visit the What’s On 4 Me Awards website and click the Voting Link.

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Joanna Helcké, Zest4lifeUK, Loughborough

August 27, 2013

All Awards nominees are given the opportunity to showcase their great work on our Blog.  So, remember to Sign up for our Blog to hear news of other nominees coming shortly!

Hi there, I’m Dr Joanna Helcké and I’m a pregnancy and postnatal fitness expert, juggling career alongside looking after my three lively boys. In 2009 I founded Zest4lifeUK and have looked after the fitness of hundreds of women working with an entire spectrum of women, from fitness novices to team GB athletes.

Zest4lifeUK offers a really unusual range of specialist exercise classes designed to help women have a happy, healthy and sociable time throughout pregnancy, into early motherhood… and beyond. What makes these fitness classes so different?

JoannaHelckeFirstly, no-one needs to worry about childcare because babies come along to all the classes – from postnatal Pilates to outdoor buggy workouts – and they are even catered for with lots of play gyms, toys and play pens for the crawlers.

“But what else is different about the Zest4lifeUk fitness classes?” I hear you ask. Well, every single one of my classes includes a social aspect. For example, BounceBack  is my mother-and-baby post natal Pilates class and this is how it works: we have a 15 minute outdoor warm up in a beautiful field (yes, even in winter, because research has proven that exercising outdoors in lovely surroundings is of great psychological benefit). We then move indoors and the babies have fun on their play gyms whilst the mums do their exercises, each person working at the correct intensity and level depending on how recently she gave birth, what type of birth she had, to what extent her abdominals have been affected by pregnancy etc. After an hour of exercise I serve tea, coffee, and herbal infusions with a mini homemade biscuit (made by me!) for the mums so that they can have time to socialise, chat, swap advice, share their worries, and relax.

Each type of class that I run includes this sort social element as I am convinced that building a strong support network is vital for the mental wellbeing of new mothers.

My passion for enabling new and expectant mothers to experience the incredible benefits of pregnancy and postnatal exercise, has led me to develop the UK’s FIRST EVER online specialist pregnancy and postnatal fitness and wellbeing system, which will be accessible to women, wherever they live. It has taken me two years to create this innovative system and I am so excited about its upcoming launch on the 12 September 2013. If you’d like a sneak preview of some of my online workouts then do take a look here.

I along with my sister in law raise awareness and funds for the Hearts and Goals project. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the UK’s biggest killer. It does not discriminate agains age, fitness or gender. 12 children in the UK die every week usually during a sporting activity at school.

Placing a defibrillator into schools and sports grounds increases survival dramatically as the first few minutes are crucial and emergency services cannot usually respond in time. Sudden cardiac arrest usually strikes with no warning or symptoms.

christineDefibrillators require no training as they are fully automated and will only shock if sudden cardiac arrest is detected. We have 5 in local schools with another 2 on the way but it’s just not enough. Fabrice Muamba who collapsed during an FA cup game last year moved the need for defibrillators higher up on the public agenda. He owes his life as thousands do to a defibrillator. Ex Newcastle United Hero Peter Beardsley attended the first launch and has pledged his ongoing support.

I spend time every day emailing businesses in my local area asking for help to obtain prizes to auction. We’ve had race nights, sponsored Great North Swim etc. I liaise with schools, the F.A. and the North East ambulance service to provide awareness sessions on life saving skills. I spread awareness using social media urging people to know their pulse and sharing stories good and bad to educate. Along with a team of close friends and local business we have organised a winter snow ball at the Newcastle Marriott hotel to raise further funds.

My family have been affected I lost my brother 10 years ago at 32 and now his son, my nephew is 16 and has similar problems. We are determined to keep our children safe.

Make Scents’ first shop was opened after a yearning to provide space for UK crafters to showcase products and also to provide local children with something to do.  Almost 18 months on, things have grown slightly and we now have two shops in which we provide space and support to UK crafters as well as playing host to the most fantastic children’s parties, ladies groups, workshops, short courses and so much more.

Make ScentsAdults can come along and learn basic craft skills, children can come along and create their own bath bombs, lip balms and even soaps and everything we do is aimed at all ages.

We visit groups and clubs doing demonstrations for those less able to make their own and also run community workshops making sure we engage with as many people as is possible.

Our children’s based events are very popular and our workshops, parties and kids club are usually booked up well in advance and we have even had some great blogs written about our parties and events. The most recent being a blog by a well known children’s party supplies company – which we’re particularly proud of as it was the result of the company asking their customers to nominate their best kids party experiences and I was amazed that Make Scents kid’s parties had an entire blog dedicated to just them!

I hope to build on this by winning the What’s On 4 Me Award for the Best Music, Arts or Craft Activities or Events Provider category and it would be amazing to achieve this!

On a final note, I’d like to say good luck to everyone who is the Voting Stage, we all deserve it!

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Kev’s Klub, Hartlepool, Co Durham

August 21, 2013

All Awards nominees are given the opportunity to showcase their great work on our Blog.  So, remember to Sign up for our Blog to hear news of other nominees coming shortly!

Kev’s Klub was established in September 2005 by Project Managers Kevin and Allison McLean.  Kev’s Klub is a non-profit organisation that has been running for over seven years. They help young people over 17 years old with special needs, and their family members and carers. They give advice on practical things such as healthy eating, benefits and lifestyle choices, as well as fun, social and educational activities.

Hello my name is Allison, me and my husband Kevin have both worked in the care sector since 1999 giving us a good insight into what we think clients and carer’s need to socialise.

Kev's KlubKevin is a full time Senior Social Care Support Worker for a large Care company which is based all over the UK, with an office based in Hartlepool. Kevin is a father of 4 and grandfather to 4 wonderful children. I used to be an Activities Coordinator in an Elderly Residential Home in the town, but I had to retire due to a mobility disability. I am a mother of 2 so now have 6 between us; so as you can imagine Christmas is very busy. We live locally with my youngest daughter and Tilly the daft dog border collie.

Kev’s Klub was born through a lack of things to do on a Evening in Hartlepool.  We got the idea of a club because we felt there is very little to do in Hartlepool on a budget. Kev’s Klub is not a club to do things but a club to socialise and relax.

Kev’s Klub is Self Sufficient none profit voluntary group that does not rely on funding, we are not backed by any governing group or company, all monies raised each week goes back into the club the following week.

The centre is disabled friendly with facilities on ground level and a disabled toilet. Activities now include a variety of things to do for instance we have indoor bowls, pool, bingo, table games, dominoes, art and crafts.

You can either come along on your own or with your carer depending on your needs.

We offer all our carers the chance to relax by giving them free access to a Reiki session from a fully qualified Reili Master.

We open 1 night a week every Wednesday 6pm-9pm based in a small community centre within Hartlepool.

We recently won an Community Achievement Award – from our local Housing Group called Vela. We were totally over whelmed by this award to know that after 7 years we are finally been recognised within the community. The nominations were for a single person or group who go beyond the call of duty in helping others, whether that be the young, old or disabled people or who have improved the area in which they live

To find out that we have been nominated for a What’s On 4 Me Award is just so amazing, and that we have made it into the Voting stage is just so wonderful.  To think people actually believe in our little club is just out of this world! We would like to thank everyone for voting for us so far and wish that after reading my little story others will feel the need to vote for us too………

We have been nominated in 3 catergories

1) Best Community Fund Raising Group or Charity Group

2) Best Relaxation, Retreat or Getaway Provider

3) Best Socialising, Networking or Support Group

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Gail Powell, The Solopreneur, South Yorkshire

August 19, 2013

Gail close-up Photo - 2Gail Powell is the founder of The Solopreneur Ltd, a company set-up to help would-be authors to not only get that book written, but also to get it published.

There is no greater feeling than waking up each day and loving what you do for a living. Many people who decide to work for themselves often choose to turn their hobby into a business. If you are going to work for yourself then you may as well do something you know and enjoy.

However, the one challenge that new (and existing) business owners have is the ability to market what they have to offer 24/7. Being very good at what you do, enjoying your hobby is all well and good, but when a hobby becomes a business then new skills are required.

The new business owner will find they need to up-skill and that there is, of course, never enough time to do everything. When the solopreneur is busy then marketing is one of the first tasks that can go on the back burner. The problem is, however, that marketing in order to be successful is an ongoing activity meant to create a steady stream of interest and income. Picking up and trying to make sales immediately when a lull in sales occurs, is very difficult to achieve for any business. This ‘feast and famine’ cycle has seen many a small business suffer creating a great deal of stress for the business owner.

That is where Gail comes in because she can help any hobbyist/solopreneur to write and publish a book on their area of expertise. It is the one marketing tool that will demonstrate the author as the ‘go to’ person in their field. A quality well-written book will actively seek out new ‘fans’ and customers whilst the author sleeps. Add to that the passive income created from the sales of the book then this is the one must-have marketing tool for every solopreneur.

Gail is also a Life Coach, broadcaster, columnist, editor and author; combined with her years in multimedia and marketing, she is happy to help any author at any stage of their writing journey with advice and encouragement. Gail states that ‘there is no greater feeling than holding the first copy of your printed book in your hand. The sense of achievement is like no other, and having a book about you and your passion is the single best marketing tool a business owner will ever create.’

Gail has been nominated in the category Best Hobby to Business Support. To vote for Gail please visit the What’s On 4 Me Awards website and click the Voting Link.

There was a real sense of the power women can leverage by their sheer numbers. The feeling was that here was an army of entrepreneurs. Some in training, some hovering on the brink of joining up and others charging ahead with flourishing, profitable businesses. But united by being women.”
