What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Finalist

CASK CORNER LOGO 17.06.13Cask Corner first opened in 2011 under the patronage of Julie Buckley who’s mission statement was to promote Live Music in Doncaster; to both showcase and fuse young and old talent alike and to provide a platform for them to do this, to bridge the generation gap, to develop past and present musical influences and hone their musical skills, as well as to provide a stage for existing bands. They have achieved this by providing free rehearsal space, giving them an opportunity to perform either at Live and Gigging on a Tuesday, Open Mic on a Wednesday or a gig on a Friday or Saturday night. Also she wanted to make Live Music available to all, not charging an entry fee achieves this.

Julie “Very Rarely Wrong” Buckleys’ happy team consist of Adrian “Damaging Director” Daykin, Lorna “Mousekin” Buckley, Marc “I’m Off For My Sandwich” Jones, Phill “500 points in Scrabble “ Boguszewski, Alanah “Flirty” Flint, Becca “My Zips Stuck” Medley, Joie “It’s not my real name” Carruthers and Daniel “Dapper” Rowley.

Me and the girlsJulie was at Open Mic when she was informed that Cask Corner were finalists at the What’s On For Me Awards, several members of The Smoking Beagles and Groomlake Fugitives asked if they could come along to the awards. This ramshackle band of troubadours are a prime example of what she set out to achieve; the bands were formed by customers, friends and Open Mic attendees ageing from 25 to 53, they played their first gigs at Cask Corner with great success and went on to perform at T-Fest and are now a highly sought after bands.

cask corner photoAll Cask Corners events fit in with those in the Doncaster Community; many local bands performed there during Doncasters music festival MAPFest and they organised some great events for Doncasters first Steampunk weekend with a Music Hall Variety Show featuring lots of local talent. They also host Cask Fest twice a year with live music all day and night! In 2013 they were also proud to be invited to host a VIP tent at Tickhills’ first music festival, T-Fest which was a great success.

Getting to know the customers both in person and via social media is imperative to the Cask Corner team and a massive thank you goes out to all of them, the staff and the musicians for helping to make Cask Corner the great venue that it is.

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Finalist

City HeartsCity Hearts was started around seven years ago with the aim to help and support vulnerable women live a free and purpose filled life.  Since then City Hearts has started numerous projects with a view to fulfilling this aim. Projects include a 24-hour residential Restore Recovery Programme for women and two regional UK teams that offer support to victims of Human Trafficking. We have also launched City Hearts International in Ghana, a programme helping in the poorest areas of the city with a homework club and courses teaching young people business skills.  This provides much needed opportunities to prevent young people falling victim to human trafficking.

City Hearts goal is to love people back to life.  This is achieved by providing a high standard of support with the emphasis of moving individuals forwards toward their personal goals, through mentoring, counselling, friendship and practical help.

In 2011, we became part of the national support provision helping victims of human trafficking. Currently we offer accommodation and support to men, women and families caught up in the travesty of trafficking.  We provide a safe refuge for rescued victims and help them access immediate support, medical care, counselling and practical assistance toward a new future. Our trained team of caseworkers provide a high level of care and expertise.  City Hearts has established excellent links to connect victims into the community and to provide ongoing support.

There is no greater feeling than waking up each day and loving what you do for a living. Many people who decide to work for themselves often choose to turn their hobby into a business. If you are going to work for yourself then you may as well do something you know and enjoy.

toptable diners reveal their top 25 most romantic UK restaurants

In anticipation of one of the most romantic days of the year, toptable, a leading consumer destination site for restaurant bookings in the UK along with its parent company, OpenTable, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPEN), revealed today their diners’ top 25 most romantic restaurants. The list reflects the combined opinions of approximately 400,000 reviews submitted by verified toptable diners for nearly 4,000 restaurants across the UK.

The top 25 shows French cuisine as the hot choice for romance ahead of Valentine’s Day this year, accounting for almost half of the list, while Italian and British are also proving popular romantic cuisines. Despite the growing popularity of Asian food amongst UK diners, there was no room for Chinese, Indian or Thai cuisine in the top 25, with the list consisting entirely of European restaurants.

“Romance can mean very different things to different people but a gorgeous meal, perfect service and warm atmosphere make for an undeniably romantic combination. Each of these restaurants offers a different romantic experience, but all are truly best of class,” said Lucy Taylor, head of restaurant relations at toptable.

“When it comes to Valentine’s Day, the top restaurants fill up quickly so it is always best to book early. However, many diners still wait until the last minute and plenty of availability can be found on toptable.co.uk. Last year, almost 30% of bookings for Valentine’s Day were made on the 13th and 14th February,” she added.

Fred Sirieix, General Manager of Galvin at Windows, which was included on the list commented, “We are obviously delighted to be recognised as one of the most romantic restaurants. It is especially humbling knowing the distinction is based on diner reviews. We strive to create singular experiences for all our guests and when it comes to romance this quality is especially important.”

The top 25 romantic restaurants in the UK are generated from approximately 400,000 reviews collected from verified toptable diners between January 2012 and January 2013. All restaurants with a minimum “overall” score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. Restaurants were then scored and sorted according to the percentage of qualifying reviews for which “romantic” was selected as a special feature.

Dreading the clocks going back? S.A.D. – Seasonal Affective Disorder – Are you a sufferer?

SAD is a depressive disorder which occurs during the winter, starting between September and November and continuing until March or April. A diagnosis can be made after 3 or more consecutive winters of symptoms, which include a number of the following:-

Sleep problems:  Usually you have a desire to oversleep and can sometimes find it difficult to stay awake, feeling the need to sleep during the day, more often than usual.

 

Lethargy:  Feeling fatigued and have difficulty carrying on with normal routine.

 

Overeating:  Have cravings for carbohydrates and sweets, which usually result in weight gain.

Depression:  Feelings of misery, guilt or loss of self-esteem. Sometimes hopelessness and despair, sometimes apathy and loss of feelings, which lead to inactivity and inertia.

Social problems:  Where you can feel irritable and avoid social contact.

Anxiety:  Feel tense most of the time and find it difficult to deal with stress

Loss of libido:  Decreased interest in sex and physical contact.

Moodiness:  In some sufferers, extremes of mood and short periods of hypomania (overactivity) can occur in Spring and Autumn.

So, what can you do to overcome this seasonal depressive state…?

Light Therapy has been shown to be affective in up to 85% of diagnosed cases. This is exposure for up to 4 hours a day (average 1-2 hours) to very bright light, at least 10 times the intensity of ordinary domestic lighting.

Light treatment should be used daily in Winter (and dull periods in Summer) starting in early Autumn, when the first symptoms appear. It consists of sitting 2-3 feet away from a light box, usually on a table, allowing the light to shine directly through the eyes.

Treatment is usually effective within 3-4 days and the effect continues provided it is used every day. Tinted lenses, or any device that blocks the light to the retina of the eye, should not be worn.

Anti-depressant drugs.  Traditional anti-depressant drugs such as tricyclics are not usually helpful for SAD as they exacerbate the sleepiness and lethargy that are symptoms of the illness. The non-sedative SSR1 drugs such as sertraline (Lustral), paroxetine (Seroxat) and fluoxetine (Prozac) are effective in alleviating the depressive symptoms of SAD and combine well with light therapy. Daily exposure to as much natural daylight as possible, especially at midday, should help.

Psychotherapy, counselling or any complementary therapy which helps the sufferer to relax, accept their illness and cope with it’s limitations are extremely useful.

Make Your 2012 Plan!

New Year Resolutions not working out?  How about instead of making changes why not make improvements? Be a better you? Start the journey of being the YOU you know you can be, and want to be? Wow – there’s a thought!

Be honest with yourself because you know deep down that in the logical part of our hearts and mind, making changes that you don’t really want to isn’t going to work. When you change doing what you want to and what comes naturally – you’re going to be miserable and feel bad! So, how’s this for an idea….what about this January, instead of making all the new year’s resolutions like going to the gym, giving up smoking/drinking/chocolate, etc. etc…  Why not try something a bit different instead? What if you spent time working out what you can do to improve yourself instead of what you need to change? Instead of beating yourself with a stick for being and wanting all the things you think are wrong (but oh so nice) what about thinking about how you can be good to yourself throughout 2012? What would it feel like next Christmas to look back on all the things you’d done and achieved personally throughout the year?

Every January I set myself a challenge for the following year – and in the main I have achieved them – 2011 has been the year I learnt to swim underwater so I could be a proper swimming companion to my son. But now I want to take it one step further – this January I’m going to take the time and effort to make a detailed plan for 2012, something that will keep me focused, energised and motivated. I want to do something positive with my life every day, I want to be good to me, take care of myself and plan to achieve the things I know and believe I can, but as yet never have. There is no surprise that in the past I have
often not achieved my goals and dreams, generally because I’ve never gone about it in the right way.

I heard once about a lady who, through desperation, was forced to do something she never in her wildest dreams thought she could – her 4 year old Grandson got trapped under the wheels of her car when he was playing on the drive – no one’s fault, the handbrake cable just chose that moment to snap and a pleasant playtime with Grandma turned into a disaster. But you know what she did? She managed to lift the car just enough for her Grandson to free himself. In that moment of sheer emotion and panic she achieved more than she ever thought she could and happily her Grandson walked away with just a few bruises.  But, once she was over the shock and all the attention died down she began to think about all the times in her life when she had wanted to do something but hadn’t simply because she didn’t think she could. Maybe she wanted to do or buy something that was too expensive, time consuming, or difficult – that she wasn’t able because she wasn’t clever enough, brave enough, young enough, or old enough. She thought about how her life would have been different if she had applied that same negative logic when she tried to save her Grandson – the outcome didn’t bear thinking about.

But what if she had put half of that belief and determination into achieving some goals in her life – what might her life have been like? A journalist who had heard about the incident asked to interview her and he was interested to know why she seemed so subdued and reflective about her act of heroism. She explained that she felt she had missed out on so much in her life because of her limited belief in herself and her abilities. He asked her what sort of things she had wanted to do and she told of how she had always wanted to study for and achieve a degree and then lecture at university – the excuse she had for everything now of course what that she was too old, she was 70. The journalist said very simply to her that in 5 years’ time she was going to be 75, and that she could be 75 with a degree, or she could be 75 without a degree – the choice was hers.

And the same goes for all of us. This time next year when we’re getting ready for Christmas 2012 we have the choice now of being able to reflect on a year that has seen achievements, successes and positivity. We can achieve what we want to – everyone has the ability to reach their dream, but let’s not wait for an accident to happen for us to test our metal and show us what we are made of.

Let’s start planning now to realise those dreams, goals and ambitions. I know I want to look back on my life – when I am old and grey, and know that I have never let my limiting belief in myself or the limiting beliefs that others have, effect what I have done. To every problem or barrier there is a solution, it’s just a case of finding it.

Remember the 5 Ps – Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.
So be good to yourself, make a plan for 2012 that is the first step to achieving what you want to, that you know you are capable of and what you dream of.

Beware New Year Resolutions!

If you are still trying to stick to yours, or still deciding whether you should set yourself one – a New Year Resolution that is…!  Read on for tips on how to plan to succeed with your goals from Lorraine Hall of Chiave Training & Development.

The New Year always brings out the need to make changes in our lives as part of the ‘New Year, New Me’ process and we avidly set about setting New Year resolutions.

 

Beware!

 

Resolutions are where we resolve to do things differently e.g. Stop smoking, lose weight, change career, but resolutions are not goals hence the lack of success in achieving the changes we want.

 

Part of the failure to achieve and fulfil our resolutions is due to too many big changes implemented in one go.

 

For example we resolve to be healthy and on the first of January we join a gym, give up chocolate, stop drinking and give up smoking. This really is the road to failure and you can guarantee you’ll be back on the booze with a cigarette in one hand and a chocolate in the other by midnight, resolutions out the window and the feeling of failure hanging over our heads like a huge cloud of doom.

 

So what can we do to change our health, life, career or any other aspect of our lives that isn’t what we want?

 

Here are some tips to help you make effective and long lasting change in your life.

 

1. Identify one thing that you really want to change

– to help you do this write down ten things you are aren’t happy with in your life, you may find some of these have the same theme, so group them in one category. Look at your list and number them in order of priority. Take the top three and decide which of these is the REAL priority.

2. The next stage is to decide when you will achieve it by

– Be REALISTIC. Losing a stone in 3 weeks is not realistic. Set a date that is realistic and achievable.

3. Visualise your situation having achieved your goal on the date you have given

– What does it look like? What does it feel like?

Allow yourself a few minutes to fully see and feel what achieving your goal is like.

 

4. Write your goal down and identify at least fifteen different actions which will help you

to achieve your goal – Write everything down that comes into your head, it doesn’t matter how ridiculous your ideas may seem, write them down.

5. At this point take a break

– do something different for five to ten minutes and then come back to your actions list.

6. Review your action list and identify 3 actions that you want to keep

– Cross out the other items and prioritise the actions you want to keep 1 – 3. These are the three actions you are going to implement into your life.

7. Implement your actions – Action 1: implement this week, decide on a date and time.

 

Action 2: implement within two weeks, decide on a date and time, and Action 3: implement within a month, decide on a date and time.

 

Setting small, measurable, achievable, realistic, timed (SMART) targets within a set time period will improve your chances of success.

 

8. You now have an action plan to be implemented over a short time period.

Your goal is clear and you have a clear vision of what the changes will look like by your achievement date.

9. Write it down – Write all the dates you have identified for implementing actions and your achievement date in your diary.

 

10. JDI – now you have an action plan Just Do It!

– On the way to achieving your goal life happens, small set backs will occur, that’s life.

Keep your visualisation of success at the forefront of your mind when the going gets tough.

Is Yoga Really for Everyone?

Here at the What’s On 4 Me office, we get a lot of feedback from our fans about the types of  activities they are looking to get involved in. One activity that comes up time  and time again is yoga. I am the first to admit that my knowledge of yoga is limited! When we decided a few weeks ago, to start a one year long feature on yoga and meditation, I knew it was the time to get better acquainted with yoga!

The excellent article Marilyn at What’s On 4 Me put together, gives us a  great understanding of what yoga is all about and the many different styles of yoga we can practice. This then lead me to conclude: could yoga really be the exercise for me? So this blog aims to provide you with the answers I’ve found to some of the questions I had about exactly who can practice yoga!

Is yoga just for women?

This is one of the first misconceptions! Yoga is not something that is immediately associated with men and yoga is often (wrongly) perceived as exclusively ‘female oriented’. In recent years though, a number of high profile male celebrities, including footballer Ryan Giggs and musician Sting, have explained the benefits they’ve received from practicing yoga. Sting was introduced to yoga at his late 30s. Since then he has mastered complex asanas of Ashtanga Yoga while also practicing a special variety of Jivamukti yoga. Sting says his aging process is reversing thanks to yoga. Overall, he and his wife praise yoga for maintaining their well-being and the high energy levels. In Ryan Giggs case, Hatha yoga has proved a balm for those persistent hamstring injuries,  prolonging a career that has now taken on an  unusual reverse trajectory: a player who with age has suffered less rather than more with injuries.

Can  yoga help me lose weight?

Any style of yoga helps tone, lengthen, and strengthen the muscles, which can contribute to the sculpting of the body, but not necessarily to weight loss. The most obvious physical benefits of yoga include loosening of muscles that have been tightened by inactivity, tension, and stress. Yoga also increases the range of motion of joints, enhances flexibility, and can help correct postural problems that may have resulted from weight gain.

Yoga also offers psychological benefits. Weight gain often brings with it a great deal of harsh self-judgment. Through yoga, this can be counteracted by reconnecting with our bodies and quiet the counterproductive messages that often arise in our minds. Re-engaging in physical activity can also foster a renewed sense of control over our lives, a quality that sometimes diminishes as one’s weight refuses to budge!

On a physiological level, certain styles of yoga can be more appropriate for people who have weight loss as a primary intention. Vinyasa-style class, where movement and breath link poses together, can build heat and potentially result in greater calorie burn. This style of practice can supplement other aerobic exercise that you’re involved in, such as walking, running, biking, or swimming.

Am I too old to take up yoga?

In short, no! One of the most appealing aspects of yoga is its ability to be practiced by people of all ages. In other words, it’s never too late to start studying.  In particular, older practitioners find that there are amazing health benefits to yoga. From lowered blood pressure to regulating cholesterol  levels, yoga helps the body live to its utmost and healthiest potential. In addition, yoga works wonders to alleviate depression, and even increases a general vitality that helps us live more active lives at any age.

Do I have to change my lifestyle to practice yoga?

Again the answer is no! Yoga is not a religion. It doesn’t require that you fast or abstain. You don’t have to become a vegetarian or change your eating patterns. Nor do you have to give up drinking or smoking. However, you might notice that your tastes change after you begin to practice yoga. As you become healthier and more in tune with your body, you MAY feel differently about the impacts overeating, smoking and drinking alcohol have on your body.

I’m pregnant, is it safe for me to do yoga?

Studies have shown that women who exercise (moderately and safely, of course) during pregnancy may feel better during preganancy, labour, and delivery compared with sedentary women. As with any new exercise programme, you should check with your Doctor before you start. Yoga during pregnancy, particularly after the first trimester, does require some special considerations. You should look for a pregnancy yoga or prenatal yoga class. As you get bigger, use more props such as blocks and straps, to help you work  through poses, and use a wall or a chair to help you keep your balance when you’re doing balancing poses.

After delivery you’ll be getting a new and different kind of exercise from bending, lifting, and carrying a baby. But these activities can leave you with stiff muscles and stress, not to mention sleep deprivation. Yoga is one of the best exercises to do after pregnancy because it provides an outlet for the physical and emotional stress associated with caring for a newborn. Whether you want to return to your pre-pregnancy yoga practice or you want to start doing yoga as a way to slim down and start an exercise programme, be sure to ease into your yoga practice and focus on restorative postures. Focus on releasing tension, which will help you deal with the stress of being a new mum.

Can I do yoga as I suffer with mobility problems?

People with mobility difficulties (paraplegia, quadriplegia, osteoporosis, arthritis, obesity or those who are frail and worried about falling or have lower limb injuries) have greater challenges in making active living part of their lives. For those of us with mobility difficulties, being active may sometimes require more planning and organisation. But it’s worth it. Physical activity is key to a good quality of life and offers both short- and long-term health benefits. In order to have a positive experience from your first yoga classes, try a beginner’s level gentle hatha practice. Kripalu, Viniyoga and Integral are good choices because the teachers are trained to work with differing abilities and body types. Chair yoga is also a possibility for those with limited mobility. You should speak to the yoga teacher before your first class to ensure that you are comfortable and the teacher will be prepared to offer modifications and props as necessary. If you do not feel ready for a group class, private yoga sessions maybe the way to go. This can be a great way to learn basic poses and gain the confidence to use props in an effective way before joining a group practice. Becoming knowledgeable about yoga is the best way to ensure that you will feel at ease.
