SMC 220213-10The Social Media Consultancy Limited was formed in January 2012 by Jayson Gurney, after spending 12 months successfully organising and host 3 regional monthly Social Media Cafes in Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle through his IT business, SOHO IT Solutions.

The main aim of the Social Media Cafes was to help small business owners, managers and non-profit group members to embrace Social Media in an open and friendly networking environment.  Jayson appreciated the need for free professional advice, guidance and support – all the regional Social Media Cafes, of which there are now 5 – Darlington, Durham, Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle and Hartlepool still offer FREE support.

The business has gone from strength to strength – it now offers affordable hands-on training workshops to help business owners gain the skills to manage their own Social Media presence.  In addition to this it has established two monthly Support Groups, again aimed at helping business embrace social media to promote their products and services.

Late in 2012, Jayson received an unexpected phone call from HootSuite inviting him to become a Partner. Several months later, The Social Media Consultancy becomes an official HootSuite Pro partner – strengthening their skills within the Social Media market.

Once again, The Social Media Consultancy have been nominated for a “What’s On 4 Me Award”, last year we made the finals, but 2012 was not our year.  Hopefully, 2013 will be our year as we have been nominated for two categories.

  • Best Hobby to Business Support
  • Best Socialising, Networking or Support Group

We are delighted to have been nominated and would like to thank everyone for their loyal support.

Jayson Gurney, Managing Director

kidney

I found out that I had kidney failure whilst pregnant with my daughter Georgina in 2005.  It was a huge shock for me and my family.  In 2007 a group of patients decided to form Doncaster & Bassetlaw Kidney Association (DaBKA) as a registered charity and have gone from strength to strength.  I have been a Trustee committee member and secretary of DaBKA from the start.

When Georgina was two, my kidneys failed and I had to start peritoneal dialysis at home four times during the day.  I then progressed to APD, dialysing for nine hours a night.  After PD was no longer suitable I went on to Haemodialysis in hospital three days a week, for four hours.  In February 2011, ‘the call’ came and I was fortunate to receive a kidney transplant.  The road after transplant has not been smooth and i have to take a cocktail of drugs every day but the difference to my life is amazing.  I can be a proper mum now and I enjoy life to the full, making the most of every minute.

I have campaigned to raise awareness of organ donation, and have done several interviews on local and national radio. I met Princess Anne when she came to open Doncaster dialysis unit.  As secretary of DaBKA, I have helped to organise and plan many local kidney patient days out, social events balloon launches and Christmas parties.

Being diagnosed and living with renal failure is often very frightening and sometimes isolating and I feel able to help other patients by sharing own experiences which will hopefully help and reassure fellow kidney patients.

When I found out that I had been nominated for a What’s On 4 Me Award I was overwhelmed.  Thank you to everyone who has voted for me, I really do appreciate it.

I hope that by reading this blog, if you believe in organ donation it has spurred you on to sign the register,  if just one person signs the register then I have achieved a small bit of what I set out to do.

Thank you to everyone who has voted for me, and for reading this blog, I really do appreciate it.

Doncaster & Bassetlaw Kidney Association was formed in 2007 by a group of local Kidney Patients.  The charity has gone from strength to strength. Our main aim is to help and support all renal patients, their family and friends live with kidney disease.

We have organised patient days out, and had a most enjoyable day out at Bridlington.  Kidney patients in our area are give away free blood pressure monitors.  Monitoring your blood pressure is very important in kidney disease. We provide medical alert wristbands, information DVD’s for new patients.  Small grants are available to patients -so far we have awarded grants for laminate flooring, travel to out of town hospitals and kitchen appliences.  We try to hold social events throughout the year and our Christmas party is always a great success.  The ferret racing and townfield gala have proved most popular.  Every quarter we produce a newsletter.  Funds are raised by our great supporters by donations, Christmas raffles, balloon launches and selling Christmas cards.

We also fully support the organ donation campaign and promote organ donation as much as possible.

We are delighted to have been nominated and thank everyone for their continued support.

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Amatsu Training School, Herts

October 4, 2013

AmatsuThe Amatsu Training School in Hertfordshire was established in 2005 by Jane Langston, specialising in the training of Amatsu Practitioners.  What’s that, you ask?  Amatsu is an amazing complementary therapy that uses diagnostic tools from a wide range of disciplines including muscle testing and orthopaedic testing to understand and explain the body’s natural movement principles.  During a treatment the therapist will assess specific dysfunctions and the most effective way to restore balance back to the whole body with minimum intervention. This is possible because of the application of natural body movement, Taijutsu, which is one of the things that makes Amatsu unique.  Taijutsu or natural body movement (as it translates from Japanese) is used by the practitioner to induce movement in the client which then facilitates a deeper level of integrated, whole body correction.  Its definitely more than just a massage!

Our teaching team of Jane Langston and Taz Faruqi have a combined teaching experience of 20 years, and have clinical experience of more than 30 years. They are helped by their trainee teacher Gina Croft who is a whizz at admin too. Together they have written outstanding training modules which are enhanced by video clips of all techniques – no excuse to forget what was demonstrated in class!

The training requires dedication, as it takes two years to complete, and there are over 40 in-class training days and two years of distance learning to supplement the classroom. Our classes are full of information, both theoretical and practical, and are above all, fun!  Our students come from all walks of life and are all ages, which means we have to teach in a variety of styles to suit the needs of the learners. The highlight of the two years is the final revision weekend, which is a residential weekend of non-stop learning.

We have prided ourselves in teaching to the highest standard, receiving the Institute for Complementary and Natural Medicine’s award for Best Complementary Medicine Company in 2012.

The sister company, The Amatsu Clinic Rickmansworth, is where Jane, Taz and Gina work in their clinical practice, offering quality treatments to the south east of England.

We are delighted to be nominated in no less than 4 categories in the What’s On 4 Me Awards –

“Best Skill or Academic Learning Provider” or “Most Inspirational Instructor or Tutor” for The Amatsu Training School Ltd and

“Best Beauty, Lifestyle or Wellbeing Service” and “Best relaxation Provider” for The Amatsu Clinic Rickmansworth.

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Bramley Cavies, Leeds

Helen and Christine Broadhead are the co-founders of Bramley Cavies Animal Rescue and Education. Bramley Cavies was set up by the mother-daughter team when they realised the desperate need for a safe and loving place for abandoned and unwanted guinea pigs to go.

Helen has worked with animals since the age of 14 and, as such, has gained a large amount of knowledge not only with guinea pigs, but also with many other species of animals. She is passionate about the animals she helps and will help as many as possible. She recently took in a snake after a frantic phone call saying a couple had found it on their dining table after being out for the day! Helen quickly found space for the snake and had it safe in its new home within just a couple of hours.

bramleycaviesChristine is Helen’s mother who encouraged and nurtured Helen’s love of animals. Growing up the house was always full of a variety of animals which together they looked after and nurtured.

Helen and Christine have owned guinea pigs for many years and love their cheeky, fun loving nature. The rescue was founded in 2011 and, in just 18 months had achieved registered charity status. The rescue has grown from strength to strength, growing from rescuing and rehoming guinea pigs to many other small animals including, but not limited to, rabbits, tortoises, snakes and even tarantulas.

The rescue has also grown to include a larger education side. Helen and the team are regularly visiting local schools, nursing homes, tourist attractions and events to raise awareness not only making people aware of the amount of animals in need, but also in the correct way to care for the animals. They educate people on the correct housing animals need and the correct diet amongst other things. It is the rescues belief that if they can promote positive ownership, less animals will end up in rescues as a result.

All the team at Bramley Cavies Animal Rescue and Education are passionate about animals, big and small, and wherever they go they are promoting animal welfare and spreading information on how to care for animals.

Bramley Cavies has been nominated in the category Best Community, Fund Raising Group or Charity Group. To vote for Bramley Cavies please visit the What’s On 4 Me Awards website and click the Voting Link.

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Joanna Helcké, Zest4lifeUK, Loughborough

Hi there, I’m Dr Joanna Helcké and I’m a pregnancy and postnatal fitness expert, juggling career alongside looking after my three lively boys. In 2009 I founded Zest4lifeUK and have looked after the fitness of hundreds of women working with an entire spectrum of women, from fitness novices to team GB athletes.

Zest4lifeUK offers a really unusual range of specialist exercise classes designed to help women have a happy, healthy and sociable time throughout pregnancy, into early motherhood… and beyond. What makes these fitness classes so different?

JoannaHelckeFirstly, no-one needs to worry about childcare because babies come along to all the classes – from postnatal Pilates to outdoor buggy workouts – and they are even catered for with lots of play gyms, toys and play pens for the crawlers.

“But what else is different about the Zest4lifeUk fitness classes?” I hear you ask. Well, every single one of my classes includes a social aspect. For example, BounceBack  is my mother-and-baby post natal Pilates class and this is how it works: we have a 15 minute outdoor warm up in a beautiful field (yes, even in winter, because research has proven that exercising outdoors in lovely surroundings is of great psychological benefit). We then move indoors and the babies have fun on their play gyms whilst the mums do their exercises, each person working at the correct intensity and level depending on how recently she gave birth, what type of birth she had, to what extent her abdominals have been affected by pregnancy etc. After an hour of exercise I serve tea, coffee, and herbal infusions with a mini homemade biscuit (made by me!) for the mums so that they can have time to socialise, chat, swap advice, share their worries, and relax.

Each type of class that I run includes this sort social element as I am convinced that building a strong support network is vital for the mental wellbeing of new mothers.

My passion for enabling new and expectant mothers to experience the incredible benefits of pregnancy and postnatal exercise, has led me to develop the UK’s FIRST EVER online specialist pregnancy and postnatal fitness and wellbeing system, which will be accessible to women, wherever they live. It has taken me two years to create this innovative system and I am so excited about its upcoming launch on the 12 September 2013. If you’d like a sneak preview of some of my online workouts then do take a look here.

What’s On 4 Me 2013 Awards Nominee – Restart a Heart, Northumberland

I along with my sister in law raise awareness and funds for the Hearts and Goals project. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the UK’s biggest killer. It does not discriminate agains age, fitness or gender. 12 children in the UK die every week usually during a sporting activity at school.

Placing a defibrillator into schools and sports grounds increases survival dramatically as the first few minutes are crucial and emergency services cannot usually respond in time. Sudden cardiac arrest usually strikes with no warning or symptoms.

christineDefibrillators require no training as they are fully automated and will only shock if sudden cardiac arrest is detected. We have 5 in local schools with another 2 on the way but it’s just not enough. Fabrice Muamba who collapsed during an FA cup game last year moved the need for defibrillators higher up on the public agenda. He owes his life as thousands do to a defibrillator. Ex Newcastle United Hero Peter Beardsley attended the first launch and has pledged his ongoing support.

I spend time every day emailing businesses in my local area asking for help to obtain prizes to auction. We’ve had race nights, sponsored Great North Swim etc. I liaise with schools, the F.A. and the North East ambulance service to provide awareness sessions on life saving skills. I spread awareness using social media urging people to know their pulse and sharing stories good and bad to educate. Along with a team of close friends and local business we have organised a winter snow ball at the Newcastle Marriott hotel to raise further funds.

My family have been affected I lost my brother 10 years ago at 32 and now his son, my nephew is 16 and has similar problems. We are determined to keep our children safe.

Make Scents’ first shop was opened after a yearning to provide space for UK crafters to showcase products and also to provide local children with something to do.  Almost 18 months on, things have grown slightly and we now have two shops in which we provide space and support to UK crafters as well as playing host to the most fantastic children’s parties, ladies groups, workshops, short courses and so much more.

Make ScentsAdults can come along and learn basic craft skills, children can come along and create their own bath bombs, lip balms and even soaps and everything we do is aimed at all ages.

We visit groups and clubs doing demonstrations for those less able to make their own and also run community workshops making sure we engage with as many people as is possible.

Our children’s based events are very popular and our workshops, parties and kids club are usually booked up well in advance and we have even had some great blogs written about our parties and events. The most recent being a blog by a well known children’s party supplies company – which we’re particularly proud of as it was the result of the company asking their customers to nominate their best kids party experiences and I was amazed that Make Scents kid’s parties had an entire blog dedicated to just them!

I hope to build on this by winning the What’s On 4 Me Award for the Best Music, Arts or Craft Activities or Events Provider category and it would be amazing to achieve this!

On a final note, I’d like to say good luck to everyone who is the Voting Stage, we all deserve it!
